MIT - Universities Ranking

Hi all,

I would like you help me to rank the following universities regarding the MIT.

UTS.
Macquarie.
UNSW.
University Of Sydney.

I am going to Sydney for doing an MIT in July 2008 and I still hesitant about the university I have to choose.
UNSW and University of Sydney are very well recognised.
UTS are professionnal career-focused apparently less recognised than the 2 above.
And Macquarie looks innovative and well linked with the local industry, but falls in the ranking this year.

I know is not a easy request and many posts has been already written but not by this way.

Please be numerous to rank these universities 'cause that will be useful for lot of people.

My opinion is directly the opposite from the order in your list:

4th UTS.
3rd Macquarie.
2nd UNSW.
1st University Of Sydney

UTS is highly overrated for IT. Don't be fooled by its name, a lot of emphasis on academic programs at UTS have nothing to do with "Technology". They prefer to focus on a spurious notion called "Teaching and Learning" and have largely neglected research, hence their total non-appearance in any of the international rankings. This focus on "Teaching and Learning" is understandable because UTS has been getting a lot of funding from the government for winning teaching and learning prizes (over $8m in 2007). The good universities guides give UTS 4 stars for research grants but on 3 stars for research intensity. This indicates that they maybe wasting research dollars, possibly redirecting some to teaching and learning programs. Moreover, by making their programs "practice-orientated", some UTS programs are more like TAFE than university. Sort of like the former UK polytechnics that were controversially converted to universities in the early 1990s. There was actually more academic merit at UTS when it was NSWIT (ie before it officially became a uni).

The other 3 seem to be serious academic institutions. I don't know much about macq, but UNSW is much better for tech and engineering than Usyd.

I think I will do my MIT at UNSW.
That looks like to be the good compromise between the tech side and the reputation side.

USYD is better in world ranking as well as domestic ranking, it is one of the oldest uni in aussie.
UNSW has good reputation in sciences and engineering courses, it is one of the newest uni in aussie but has done a great job over the year.
so usyd is better in overall but go for unsw if u want to study engineering.
