Talking Heading to QUT in July 2010

Hi Everyone,

I may be going to QUT to study IT23 this coming July 2010 for 1 year. Was thinking if anyone here can share some experience on this course and help with e questions below.

- Do we have to purchase laptop there or we can bring over a computer brought in Singapore? Which is more advisable.

- Is the course module assessment of project-based or exam-based?

- During the 1 year, do we have a final year project?

- Any recommendation of accommodation that are cheap and good?

Many Thanks. (:

Emily, its cheaper to buy your own laptop from Singapore. QUT is wireless in most parts and the computer labs can get pretty busy.

Generally QUT's assessment basis is made out of two or three components.

1) Written assessments - Project focus or analytical presentations (Usually they require evidence based references - Might not apply to IT)

2) Exams - Online (again this may not apply to IT course), fmid-term and/or final.

3) Presentation - Either individually or as a group.

Another thingy...sometimes they allocate marks for tutorial attendance...again this is up to the course coodinator if this is appropriate.

First year is generally a honeymoon year to ease you chappies in. Should not be a problem for you, Singaporeans are pretty good academically - study by rort...lol (Deliberate play of words!)

Accomodation - there are different types of accomodation - Share housing, home stay (which include meals) or rent a room from a family. Share housing means your house mates could be students of working individuals...it can be hairy if someone in the house does not pull their weight and do the washing up or cleaning the toilets etc.

Emily, try to T up with other Singaporeans coming over to see if you can share a house. If not come early and start looking when you're here. You can always stay in a backpackers hostel until you find suitable accomodation. The problem in securing something online is that you don;t know who you'll be sharing with, ehat is the condition of the property and whether its environment is suitable to your studies. Do come ealry to check out because its not just a matter of finding an accommodation and moving in..there's a lot of settling in to do..Getting to know your campus, developing a shopping routine in line with your budget, securing medical insurance and etc etc. I am from QUT myself, also was from Singapore but have been here way too long...lol

Good luck...if you need any help just call......

Hmmm...I know Urban nest is pretty new and everything is nice and new but its really very pricey...even for an old man like me...lol. in the long term, prices you pay at Urban nest is going to pay for a really nice and LAVISH holiday post graduation...lol

Take up my suggestion if you don;t mind...you will find that in the long run it will make sense.

Cheers

Default Hmmm!

Wow, Urban nest used to have skyhigh rates when they first opened, hence I discounted them as a recommendation to those on a budget. If it is for $149/wk then go for it because that's pretty good value. I am not surprised if there aren't many $149/wk rooms available at that place though or if there are any other conditions attached to it. If you can secure it for $149/wk, then sign on for at least 1 year!! Its in southbank so it almost like living in orchard road itself...lol....nah, more like toa payoh markets.... joking. Seriously southbank is a very nice precinct...very new buildings, southbank cinema - very cheap for students (shows from under $6 for students), there's southbank shopping and dining like boat quay. There's a manmade beach/pool...you'll love it. Walking distance to QUT gardens point where you can catch a free bus to kelvin Grove...hmmmm, is your campus in KG or GP? Geez, I have never explored this but I guess its KG. If its KG then its a bit of a hassle because you may choose to take a bus instead of walking to GP and then catch the free campus loop bus.

Emily, I am sure your cooking skills are pretty up to date, maybe not up to curry fish head standard...lol but certainly go for accommodation where you can cook. Several reasons..you are not compelled to go back home for meals..frees you up to focus on studying at campus or moving around. Secondly you have variety...you can either eat horible self cook maggi or dine at Maccas...lol Sorry I am one those clowns that like to make fun of others. I am certain Katey (forum administrator) will be reaching for her shot gun just about now...and setting it from stun to MAIM!!

If you are not too certain about urban nest...make sure there are no hidden clauses, then stay a couple of months with them and get a feel of things in Brisbane in terms of accommodation before you commit any further. however in all honesty, for $149/wk at urban nest, i would certainly say jump in. Rarely will you find nice and clean accommodation for under $140/wk. yes, its a bit pricier than for most students but for me, i think its excellent value for clean and trendy conscious singaporeans...lol. All the best...if you and friend need help when you arrive Brisbane, call me 0433 121 774...I am more than happy to help a fellow Singaporean...lol. cab fare is pretty steep and make sure that they use the meter ..there has been reports that some are exploiting international visitors...not many but enough to give the industry a bad name. Just got this from a friend I met yesterday whose a cab driver himself.

Good luck and you can buy me kway chap next time...lol

Hi, I have just listed a room to rent which is very close to the city, I am a working mother with a primary school child. The room is $150 per week, which includes electricity and is very clean and furnished. If interested email me. I am also a part time university student at Griffith University at South Bank. We live at Ashgrove which is only 4kms to city and walking distance to bus stops and shops.
