Hi,
I am living in Melbourne since 2008. I came here as a student.
Average living cost including housing/food/travel can be around 1200 to 1500 per month. This depends on your life style. As a uni student you can work part time 20 hrs and earn some money.
It is always cheap to stay outside uni accommodation as its cheap. Uni accommodations are quiet expensive. Best thing is to stay with a friend or relative for a month or so and look around for a sharing house. If you dont know anyone you can ask Uni to make one month temporary accommodation.
Hope this helps!

If you learn how to cook, and not spend money on $7~$20 meals every day, you can live like me. My monthly expenditure in Melb. is only $800 but I live like a king. And I can cook pretty damn well too now - everyone is impressed, especially my parents - since I never went near the kitchen when I was back home.

Grimm.

I am curious, how much do you spend per week on food in average ?
Do you work part time ? Was it hard finding a part time job ?
Do you have a cellphone ?
Do you take the bus/tram etc and if so, how much does that cost you per month ?

$50 pw on food. That's mostly groceries for cooking and one/two meals out per week.

Yes I work part time. No it isn't hard to find a part time job. Best of all, if you work in food & beverage industry, you get to bring home tonnes of food - which saves you a lot more.

Yes I do have a cellphone on an iphone4s cap plan.

Transport using metlink tickets is about $20 a month? Only use weekend saver for jollying around in the city.

Sweet! Thanks for the responses ! I have a few more questions.

How much do you pay for your cellphone plan per month ?
How much do you pay for housing per month (shared accommodation ? Individual bills?)
How many hours do you work a week ( do you work the maximum 20 hours ?)
What is the wage you are being paid ? (if I may ask)

and 20 $ per month for transport ? That seems super low, way to low actually.. do you walk most of the time or what ?

Well the expenses are honestly more than the students can earn, so its better if they back up the academic expenses.
This would make them comfortable to live there, and those who cant bear the tuition fees will have to struggle a lot more than they ever expected.
Its a bitter truth
